We walked through the entrance to the Ein Gedi Nature Reserve and started up a scorching slope. There was little foliage, no shade, and the ground was blazing. Looking at the canyons in front of us, I wondered why we had planned to come here on a summer afternoon when we'd already hiked up Masada at dawn. We were hot, tired, dispirited. Then we came to the first turn off the path - I went down to explore and found a waterfall with a pool at the bottom, big enough for 20 people to sit and lay down in. The water was clear and cool with a soft layer of smooth little stones on the bottom. A couple of us stayed and the group continued into the canyon. They visited no less than three more waterfalls also with swimming pools at the bottom.
We barely scraped the surface of this amazing park. In cooler weather, you can take long fascinating hikes, maybe see the native antelope and all the other water wonders. It not only feels like paradise, this is a place mentioned in the "Song of Songs." I completely get why.
Transport information and advice
We went in a car but there's great public transportation in Israel, so there may be a bus.
