In 1967, James Bond climbed to the peak of one of the volcanoes in Kirishima-Yaku National park to infiltrate the base of an international terrorist. While there is no criminal there in real life, you can still climb the volcanoes for the incredible views you get from the top of them. All in all, there are 23 volcanic cones with about 15 craters that will leave you breathless.
Visit the National Park and pick up a map that will guide you through the different hiking routes that are available. There are also guided tours available at different times in the day. Another popular activity is to camp along or, in some cases, inside the crater of a dormant volcano. In the winter, the park attracts skaters, though the hiking is by far the selling point for this particular park.
Transport information and advice
There is transportation available to take you to the park should you need it, though having a car would be best for any national park.
