The Achuar tribe are a group of native people who have been living deep in the Amazon forest and weren't "found" by the outside world until the 1960s. Once a group of headhunters, they are now slowly being brought into more civilized walks of life. They are also the main employees and future owners of the Kapawi Eco-Lodge, which caters to those who have adopted a green lifestyle and way of living. You won't find any plastic here and the entire hotel uses compost disposal and serves up organic food.
The Achuar will take you out in a dugout canoe to see the Amazon's pink dolphins, share sips of chicha (a fermented yucca root beverage), and teach you to use a blowgun. They'll also show you virgin rain forest filled with electric-blue butterflies and red howler monkeys.
While it may be located in the jungle, the Kapawi Eco-Lodge offers luxurious furnishings and world class food. the bar also serves up local twists on classic beverages and some just plain odd drinks that you're sure not find anywhere else. Try the Pisco Sour for a very different happy hour experience.
Transport information and advice
In order to get here you take a motorized canoe along the river that the lodge is located on. You'll get picked up and taken here by the native Achuar, so don't worry about transportation.
