If you want to really appreciate the beauty of the bayou and also have a great thrill ride, go on a high-speed airboat tour that starts just before dark and continues after. You'll see the many flowers we know from our gardens - like hyacinth - growing wild. Once the sun sets, you'll see the flashing eyes of the alligators and other critters. A word to the wise - in warm months, you'll need to bundle up against swarms of mosquitoes after dark, but don't let that stop you because this is too magical to miss! Tour places will give you a heavy hooded jumpsuit plus goggles to protect you. Buy cheap kerchiefs in the New Orleans flea market to cover your face from the eyeballs down. We saw a nest of baby alligators...and lived to tell the story! Incredible!
Transport information and advice
Many of the tour places provide van service from downtown New Orleans hotels. Get brochures in the tourism office in Jackson Square.
